Measures 2 3/8" wide, 3 1/2" deep and 4 3/4" tall.


A hand-carved dark stone head, featuring stylized facial incisions and wearing a distinct cap. Artifacts featuring this specific carving technique, flat facial structure, and choice of dark stone material can be found across several global cultures and historic eras. It closely mirrors the artistic style of West Mexican cultures, such as the Mezcala culture or early Olmec tradition, which are renowned for abstracting facial features into geometric planes using dark stone fragments. The broad nose, incised eyes, and compact shape share characteristics with vintage indigenous Inuit shamanic masks and head sculptures. The deliberate accentuation of the lips and chin structure is reminiscent of African tribal stone carvings and Zimbabwean Shona folk art.


These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s. See less
