A striking and highly desirable pair of antique country primitive comb-back English Stick back English Windsor style armchairs featuring an incredible, deeply weathered rustic patina. Built with traditional continuous bentwood arm rails, slender spindle backs, and deeply contoured wedge saddle seats resting on splayed legs.
Interestingly, while matching in form, the chairs display classic primitive construction variations: one chair features a deeply carved saddle seat shaped from a single solid wood plank, while the other is crafted from three historic joined planks. Most notably, both chairs retain beautiful, highly sought-after traces of their original historic green milk paint/verdigris finish primarily preserved across the lower framework and the under-seats. The wood surfaces boast excellent historic texture, highlighting centuries of natural grain wear and true country utility.
Condition Report:
Good antique condition with a heavily weathered, rustic patina characteristic of primitive furniture. Structurally intact for display and light use, though showing typical separation consistent with age. The single-plank seat features a stable historic age split running along the wood grain. The three-plank seat shows typical slight separation at the historic joint seams. One chair features a slightly raised through-tenon joint where a leg meets the top of the seat. Beautiful original green paint remnants on the undersides. No maker's marks present. Sold as a pair.
Individual Dimensions:
▪ Chair 1 (Single Plank Seat): 40" H × 23" W × ~19" D (Seat: 13.5" H × 15" D × 1.5" Thick)
▪ Chair 2 (Three-Plank Seat): 38" H × 23" W × ~21" D (Seat: 13.5" H × 17" D × 1.5" Thick)
