Here is a wonderfully unusual mid-20th century collection of 14 hand-painted papier-mâché vegetables. Individually formed at approximately life size, the assortment includes eggplant, carrots, peppers, onions, radishes, tomato, cucumber and other garden vegetables.
Each piece is individually formed and beautifully hand-painted with nuanced variations in color, shading and surface detail. The substantial forms, slightly irregular shapes and visible texture of the papier-mâché give the collection wonderful character, while carefully rendered details including leafy tops, stems, painted striations and fiber roots speak to the quality of this set.
Colorful and sculptural, the collection looks fantastic gathered in a large bowl or basket, arranged across a kitchen shelf or table, or displayed simply as a group of vintage decorative objects.
The eggplant measures approximately 8ʺ × 4ʺ × 3.5ʺ; individual pieces vary in size.
