Measures 2 1/4 diameter and 6 3/4" tall.

This object is an ancient terracotta transport amphora featuring an elongated piriform body, a ridged surface, and small loop handles, typically dating from the Greco-Roman to Byzantine periods. Characterized by a pointed lower end designed for compact stacking in ship cargo or embedding in soft earth, a narrow neck, and a flared rim. Used throughout antiquity for the maritime transport and storage of essential trade liquids like wine, olive oil, and garum (fish sauce). Fitted with a custom metal ring stand to safely display the vessel upright, as its original pointed base cannot support it on a flat surface.

These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s. See less
