The elongated ovoid form is balanced by a removable finial lid and a restrained decorative vocabulary that gives the piece a strong architectural presence. Broad blue fields wrap the body, framed by cream and charcoal motifs that create a rhythmic vertical structure. The crackled surfaces, glaze variation, and subtle firing effects are characteristic of the raku process and give the vessel a richly tactile, handmade character.

Smith developed a distinctive body of raku and saggar-fired work in North Carolina, combining traditional vessel forms with highly structured decorative elements. His work is represented in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, which holds lidded ceramic vessels by the artist.

This example carries notable provenance from the Dr. Ellis F. Rubin and Suzanne Borow Rubin Collection, a major private ceramics collection assembled over approximately six decades. The Rubins were active participants in the ceramics field, traveling widely, attending seminars, joining collector societies, and building relationships with dealers, curators, and fellow collectors. Works from their collection have subsequently entered museum collections.

The original circular Rubin Collection label remains affixed to the underside and is inscribed “NC11,” apparently an internal collection inventory designation. Its survival materially strengthens the provenance of this piece and places it within a serious long-term collecting context rather than as an anonymous decorative object.
