The figure's face is rendered with large carved eyes, a tiered, banded headdress, and incised geometric patterning encircling the neck below. The reverse is left plain, letting the carved motif and the wood's natural grain and patina carry the piece.
Acquired from the personal collection of a family friend who lived in West Africa for forty years — the piece was part of a group of African objects gathered directly during that time, though no maker, tribal, or workshop attribution accompanies it.
The wood has taken on a rich, aged patina consistent with long handling and age, with visible age cracks and separations at the rim and base — original to the piece and part of its history rather than damage from shipping or recent handling.
A wonderful anchor piece for a collection of African or global tribal art, or as a striking sculptural object on its own — the kind of thing that draws people in to ask about it.
Condition notes: Age-appropriate cracking at rim and base, consistent with wood movement over time. No repairs noted. Please review all photos closely.
Materials: Carved wood, single piece, no inlay
