A wonderfully expressive mid-century landscape depicting a broad, open countryside framed by clusters of trees and gently rolling fields, executed in oil onto canvas.

The scene has been distilled into simplified, almost abstract forms, with rounded trees rising rhythmically across the middle ground and broad passages of colour suggesting fields, pathways and distant farmland.

The artist works with a distinctly modernist sensibility, favouring shape, colour and gesture over precise representation. There is a lovely looseness to the composition: forms overlap and merge into one another, while the landscape feels constructed from sweeping blocks of paint. The trees in particular have a sculptural quality, their curved silhouettes giving the scene a strong sense of rhythm and movement.

The palette is beautifully muted yet varied, combining moss and forest greens, slate and powder blues, olive and soft grey, with warmer passages of buttery yellow, dusty peach and earthy brown. A pale blue-grey sky stretches expansively above, lending a quiet, atmospheric quality to the scene.

Brushwork is confident and wonderfully visible throughout. Broad, loaded strokes sweep across the foreground, while curved, directional marks articulate the trees and contours of the land. Areas of exposed ground and loosely finished edges add to the painting’s spontaneous character, giving it the feeling of a landscape captured directly and instinctively.

This oil on canvas is housed in a complementary linen-lined wood frame with a gilt border. Both the painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.
