KNIVES AND FORKS NO.6
Size: 11 x 8.1 inches (including frame)
Oil on canvas
Bristol-based artist Brendan Lancaster finds interest in the most ordinary of subjects. In his Knives and Forks series, familiar pieces of cutlery become an exploration of composition, colour and the relationships between objects. Lancaster carefully arranges pieces collected from home and second-hand shops, experimenting with the way they point towards or away from one another and the shapes created in the spaces between them. Despite their simplicity, these small arrangements have a surprising sense of drama — a knife leaning towards a fork can suddenly feel like two characters in conversation.
Painted on unframed canvas, these works have a slightly sharper, more precise quality than Lancaster’s works on hessian, while still retaining the quietness that characterises the series. His beautifully restrained palette of earthy browns, creams and neutrals makes tiny shifts in colour all the more noticeable. He pays particular attention to warmer and cooler tones and to what he calls the “edge” of colour — the point where one colour meets another — repeatedly adjusting and layering paint until the relationship feels just right. Their intimate scale is deliberate: rather than demanding attention from across a room, these are paintings that reward looking closely, encouraging us to slow down and find something unexpectedly beautiful in the most familiar everyday objects.
