This charming lucky cat is shown in a classic seated pose, with one raised paw, large expressive eyes, whiskers and a richly painted finish in cream, red, blue, gold and black. A narrow coin slot at the top shows that the piece could also be used as a money box.

The maneki-neko is one of Japan’s best-known symbols of good fortune. The raised paw is associated with attracting visitors, customers and prosperity. The large golden koban coin reads “one million ryō”, a symbolic reference to wealth and abundance. The white label on the belly reads “prosperous business” or “commercial success”, a traditional wish for shops, restaurants and businesses.

The round medallion on the chest bears the character 招, referring to inviting or beckoning, perfectly in line with the meaning of the maneki-neko as a bringer of good luck. The red collar with floral details and the large red bow at the back make the piece especially decorative.

Today, this lucky cat is a beautiful interior accent, ideal on a counter, cabinet, display shelf or in a Japanese, vintage, eclectic or maximalist interior.

The figure is in beautiful vintage condition, with normal signs of use and age consistent with its age and material.

A highly atmospheric Japanese object with strong symbolism, plenty of character and a distinctive decorative presence. See less
