An exceptionally rare and historically important prototype of the iconic Congo Lounge Chair, designed by Theo Ruth for Artifort in the early 1950s. Produced only as a very limited pre-production series, this prototype represents an early stage in the development of one of Dutch mid-century design’s most celebrated seating concepts. Only a handful of these prototypes are believed to have produced before Artifort reshaped the design into the production version of the Congo Chair.

Inspired by the traditional ceremonial folding chairs of Central Africa, Theo Ruth developed an ingenious construction in which the chair consists of two sculptural interlocking elements that effortlessly slide together. The result is a striking architectural silhouette that perfectly balances functionality, craftsmanship and sculptural elegance.

Unlike the later production model, this prototype displays several subtle yet highly significant design differences, making it an exceptional collector’s piece for connoisseurs of early Artifort and Dutch modernist furniture.

The chair features beautifully shaped wenge veneered wooden panels with a warm, rich grain and is upholstered in its original high-quality woven fabric in a sophisticated mottled avocado green. The authentic textile greatly enhances both the historical integrity and desirability of this rare prototype.

Its low profile, generous proportions and gently reclined seating position provide outstanding comfort while emphasizing the clean geometric aesthetic for which Theo Ruth became internationally renowned.
