The substantial ceramic vase has a cream-colored crackle-glaze ground accented with colorful hand-painted enamels, dimensional moriage decoration and extensive gilt detailing. Applied figures in ornate robes surround the prominent raised elephant, while additional figures and architectural motifs continue around the entire vase. Intricate geometric borders decorate the shoulder and foot, with additional gold accents around the neck, rim and base.

Marked “Made in Japan” on the underside. This piece was produced for the Japanese export market and dates approximately to the 1920s–1940s, likely circa 1930s. The specific workshop or maker is unknown.

Measures approximately 13" tall x 8" diameter at the widest point, with a 4" top rim diameter and 4.5" base diameter. Weighs approximately 5 lbs. 9 oz.

Very good to excellent vintage condition. Overall crackling/crazing is present throughout the glazed surface and is characteristic of this style of Japanese pottery. Minor age-related wear to the gilt and painted decoration may be present. No significant chips, cracks or repairs observed.
