Introduction

A dramatic nineteenth-century Scottish Highland landscape by **William Beattie-Brown R.S.A. (1831–1909)** depicting Sgùrr nan Gillean and the northern Cuillin on the Isle of Skye.

The work combines the scholarly interest of a documented Victorian Scottish painting with considerable decorative presence.

Large boulders, stones and areas of rough Highland vegetation establish a richly textured foreground. The landscape then opens towards the cooler blue-grey mountain forms of the Cuillin beneath a broad and rapidly changing sky.

Catalogue Note

Beattie-Brown builds the landscape through a gradual transition from detailed foreground geology towards increasingly atmospheric mountain distance.

The immediate terrain is painted in warm earthy browns, muted greens and ochres. Large boulders and smaller stones create strong visual texture, while low vegetation breaks up the rugged ground.

As the composition recedes, the palette becomes progressively cooler.

The distant Cuillin are rendered in slate and blue-grey tones, softened by atmospheric perspective and changing weather.

Above, the expansive cloud formations are integral to the composition. Darker passages are interrupted by areas of lighter atmosphere, suggesting fleeting illumination across the mountains.

The combination of detailed terrain, dramatic weather and strong horizontal format gives the painting considerable wall presence.

Sgùrr nan Gillean and the Isle of Skye

Sgùrr nan Gillean is one of the principal peaks of the Cuillin and among the defining mountains of the Isle of Skye.

The identification is historically supported by the Anthony Woodd Gallery label retained on the reverse, which records the title *Sgùrr nan Gillean, Skye*.

The composition appears consistent with views from the landscape around Sligachan towards the northern Cuillin.

The wider mountain forms are associated with the northern Cuillin and Basteir area. Individual subsidiary summits are deliberately not definitively named without further topographical evidence.

Dating the Painting

The painting carries the lower-left signature:

Beattie-Brown was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1871 and became a full Academician in 1884.

The A.R.S.A. designation therefore provides persuasive evidence for a probable **1871–1884** date.

This remains a considered scholarly dating rather than an absolute documentary year of execution.

The Artist

William Beattie-Brown was born near Haddington, East Lothian, in 1831.

He studied at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder and became particularly associated with Highland landscape painting from around 1860 onwards.

His paintings combine detailed observation of the natural terrain with atmospheric effects of cloud, weather, distance and changing light.

Beattie-Brown was elected A.R.S.A. in 1871 and R.S.A. in 1884.

He exhibited extensively at the Royal Scottish Academy and also at the Royal Academy in London.

His Diploma Work, *Coire-na-Faireamh in Applecross Deer Forest, Ross-shire*, dating from approximately 1883–1884, remains within the Royal Scottish Academy Diploma Collection.

Royal Scottish Academy

Beattie-Brown maintained an exceptionally long association with the Royal Scottish Academy, exhibiting there from 1852 until 1909.

His progression from Associate to full Academician provides particularly useful chronological evidence for the present painting because its signature retains the earlier A.R.S.A. designation.
