An exceptional mid-19th-century English silver-plated footed bowl by celebrated London silversmiths Edward & John Barnard, circa 1860. The shallow lobed form is richly worked in the Rococo Revival taste with repoussé and chased flowers, scrolling foliage, pierced decoration and an undulating scalloped border.
The bowl rests upon wonderfully sculptural paw feet rising into foliate mounts, giving the relatively low form an architectural quality. The interior is arranged around a central reserve with radiating scalloped panels accented by fine punched detailing.
The underside bears the EB/JB maker's mark associated with Edward & John Barnard, accompanied by the firm's electroplate marks and the pattern or production number 5404. Edward & John Barnard operated under this partnership beginning in 1851; reference sources document their electroplate mark to approximately 1851–1868, supporting a mid-Victorian date for this piece.
