Marcel Breuer designed the chair in 1925/26 at the Bauhaus – inspired by the construction of his bicycle – creating the first piece of furniture in design history with a frame made of bent tubular steel. The chair was later named after the Bauhaus artist Wassily Kandinsky, who was captivated by the radically minimalist design. The tautly stretched leather panels for the seat, back, and armrests appear to float within the chromed tubular steel frame, allowing the clear, open construction to be fully appreciated. The rich black of the leather underscores the timeless, uncompromising elegance of this classic, which is still produced unchanged by Knoll International today.
