Made in rural england around the mid century, this surprisingly extremely comfortable, very impressive and charmingly attractive pair of armchairs are extremely versatile and will add lovely light colouring and traditional rustic farmhouse appeal to any interior.

impressive sized and reassuringly heavy, these charming armchairs were traditionally crafted of solid pine wood, likely in northern england around the 1960s or possibly earlier. A timelessly rustic design dating back hundreds of years, lambing chairs were historically high-backed, closed armchairs used by shepherds or farmers to stay warm and comfortable while watching over new-born lambs. Once a common sight in yorkshire and lancashire farmhouse kitchens, this lovely pair is ideal as fireside reading chairs, and they would be a knockout in pretty much any setting.

they feature tall and broad panelled backs with closed sides, generously sized seats, and shapely armrests to match the curving draught-protecting wingbacks. Each chair has a lower drawer, originally intended for a bible and perhaps a bottle of whisky, and during lambing season, hay would have been put in the drawer to keep a hypothermic new-born lamb warm by the fire. The sides are closed and tapering for protection from draughts and the high backs are perfectly angled for an extremely comfortable seating position.

all in all this is an exceedingly charming and rare pair of traditional lambing armchairs, which will add gorgeous blonde colouring and a fabulous rustic farmhouse aesthetic to any setting.

condition
this pair is in very good vintage condition. Solid, sturdy, structurally sound and traditionally crafted, they have only to be expected signs of age and wear, which only adds to their vintage charm. Overall they’re a super pair of lambing chairs and if well looked after they should remain so for generations to come – please see the photos.
