The Guest Bedroom — The Bed
A beautiful place to settle in for the night.
Circa 1830 Pennsylvania German pine blanket chest featuring an unusual red-brown smoke-painted surface, paneled construction, molded lift top, interior lidded till, applied base molding and turned feet. The free-flowing dark smoke decoration creates broad swirling patterns across the front and sides, giving the chest a particularly strong American folk-art character.
Smoke decoration was used on Pennsylvania furniture during the early 19th century, creating distinctive patterns over a painted ground. Comparable Pennsylvania examples survive with similar turned feet, interior tills and smoke-painted surfaces.
Originally intended for storing household linens and textiles, this chest remains wonderfully useful nearly two centuries later. At 39.5 inches wide, it works especially well at the foot of a bed, where it can hold extra blankets, quilts and pillows while bringing authentic early American color and character to the room.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
I chose this chest for The Bed because a guest room needs places to put things away as much as it needs pretty things to look at. At the foot of a bed, this gives you wonderful storage for extra blankets and pillows without making the room feel overly furnished. But what I really like is the old red surface. Against ivory bedding, soft greens and brass, it adds just enough warmth and age to keep the room from looking too perfect. And unlike a newly made storage chest, this one has been doing exactly this job for close to two hundred years.

The early painted surface shows considerable expected wear, rubbing, scratches, discoloration and paint loss, particularly across the lid and edges; these are part of the chest's aged character. There is a hole to the back panel, likely from the loss of an old knot. The original lock is no longer present, although the lock opening and related evidence remain. Hinges show age and wear. Interior retains its lidded till and shows expected staining, marks and wear from use. Structurally sturdy and functional. Please examine photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. less
