THE DISTANT GREEN
Size: 13.2 x 26.6 inches (including frame)
Oil on canvas
A beautifully restrained mid-century abstract landscape, depicting a broad, open countryside reduced to its most essential forms, executed in oil onto canvas and dated 1960.
A distant and low ribbon of fields stretches horizontally across the composition, punctuated by slender trees and softly defined clusters of foliage. Above and below, expansive areas of pale colour create a wonderful sense of space and stillness, giving the distant landscape an almost meditative presence.
The artist takes a distinctly modernist approach to the landscape, favouring simplification and abstraction over descriptive detail. The countryside is constructed through elongated bands and flattened shapes, with trees and hedgerows appearing as loose vertical and horizontal marks. The unusually low, narrow horizon emphasises the breadth of the surrounding space and lends the painting a strikingly minimalist quality.
The palette is wonderfully understated, dominated by warm ivory, soft cream and muted yellow, contrasted against a concentrated band of sage, olive, forest green and blue-green. Subtle shifts between these greens suggest fields, distant trees and changing vegetation without defining them too precisely. The warmth of the surrounding pale ground gives the cooler greens a particularly fresh luminosity.
Brushwork is loose and expressive. Broad horizontal sweeps establish the fields and horizon, while short, upright strokes indicate trees and distant structures. Areas of dry, broken pigment allow the lighter ground to show through, introducing texture and movement to the otherwise serene composition. The sparseness of the marks feels deliberate: with remarkably little detail, the artist captures the atmosphere and rhythm of a vast rural landscape.
This oil on canvas is presented in a complementary slim gilt frame. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some scuffs.
