A large American studio pottery vase by Oregon ceramic artist Robert Graydon, signed and dated 1998. The underside is hand-incised Graydon 98, providing direct authorship and date documentation for the vessel.
The form is broadly ovoid with pronounced shoulders rising through a narrow collar into a wide, dramatically flared neck. The neck is finished in matte black, creating a strong visual contrast with the body below. The main surface carries a complex fired treatment in overlapping passages of charcoal black, graphite grey, muted blue-grey, copper red and rust. These colours move across the body in irregular cloud-like fields rather than forming a repeated painted pattern.
At 11.5 inches high and approximately 8 inches across, the vase has substantial scale within Graydon's studio production. The broad body and flared neck give the vessel a sculptural profile, while the mottled fired surface provides considerable tonal depth and variation.
The vase is best classified as American Studio Pottery with an Organic Modern character. Although documented Robert Graydon works are known with Raku descriptions, this specific vessel is catalogued conservatively as studio ceramic/art pottery without assigning a firing method beyond the visible complex fired surface treatment.
The piece was acquired in Los Gatos, California and remains in excellent condition with no chips or cracks.
