An elegant 19th-century English portable writing slope or lap desk in richly figured mahogany, ornamented with brass stringing, pierced brass corner medallions, and a central unengraved brass cartouche.
The fitted interior opens to an unusually decorative brown leather writing surface embellished with elaborate gilt tooling. Two glass ink bottles with brass caps, fitted compartments and a covered compartment with a small circular pull complete the interior. Both writing panels lift to reveal storage for papers and correspondence. The two sections of the gilt-tooled leather writing slope lift by their intact leather tabs. Dimensions are 14" W, 9.25" D. and 4.75" H when closed. When open, it is 18 3/4" long.
In 1989, Phillips Auction House in London described the piece and a copy of this documentation accompanies the box.
A beautiful and evocative antique for a library, study, or tabletop, retaining the character and evidence of use acquired during approximately two centuries.
