More than simply a macramé … Read more This is a fantastic piece of 1970s fiber art—earthy, sculptural, highly textural, and unmistakably handmade. More than simply a macramé wall hanging, it reads almost like a piece of fiber sculpture, combining intricate hand-knotting, natural materials, wood, negative space, and movement into one dramatic vertical composition. Dating to the late 1960s- early 1970s, the piece is made from a coarse, tactile natural-fiber cord in a beautiful warm tobacco/caramel brown. The exact fiber is unknown, but it has a wonderfully organic, slightly rough texture rather than the softness of modern cotton macramé.The craftsmanship is really what makes this special. Multiple knotting techniques create alternating open and densely worked sections, with elongated geometric forms running vertically through the composition. Large natural wooden beads are worked directly into the design, while long twisted elements extend from the sides and loose fringe finishes the bottom. Even the hanger is part of the artwork. The textile is worked around a real wooden rod, extending above it into an intricately constructed hanging loop rather than simply being attached to a separate hook or modern hanger. Wood, fiber, beads, knots and fringe all become part of the same sculptural composition.
At nearly five feet long, this has serious presence on a wall. It would be incredible hanging above a credenza, alongside a fireplace, in a tall entryway, or anywhere that needs something warmer and more dimensional than framed artwork. It feels equally at home in a 1970s interior, organic modern space, desert home, brutalist room, or collected mid-century setting.
