Worked entirely in warm ivory and cream, the piece is almost a study in texture. The upper portion has a dense, plush surface that gives way to an extraordinary central construction of massive braided and bundled fibers projecting outward from the textile. Rather than simply decorating the surface, these elements actually come forward into the room, giving the piece the presence of a soft sculpture. Below, raised curving bands sweep repeatedly across the woven ground, creating an almost topographic or architectural pattern before ending in a row of oversized individual tassels. The combination of dense pile, smooth weaving, chunky cord, braiding and loose fringe gives the monochromatic palette an incredible amount of depth. Even the wooden support is special. Rather than an ordinary plain dowel, the textile hangs from a 36-inch carved wooden rod with a repeating spiral/ribbed design, adding another layer of craftsmanship and warm natural material to the composition.

The absence of color actually makes this piece feel remarkably contemporary. It would be incredible in an organic-modern or neutral interior, but it has enough scale and visual weight for a true 1970s, mid-century, brutalist, California bohemian or collected eclectic space. Against a darker wall, all of that ivory relief would become especially dramatic. At nearly four feet tall and three feet across at the wooden rod, this isn’t a little decorative macramé piece—it is large-scale textile artwork capable of anchoring an entire wall.
