Vintage Peruvian Chulucanas Art Pottery Swan Statement Vessel
This is a magnificent, large-scale hand-thrown ceramic sphere vase showcasing the celebrated folk art traditions of Chulucanas, Peru. Created in the late 1990s or early 2000s, this substantial, short-necked gallery vessel features an elegant, fluid motif of stylized swans sweeping across the curved body.
Hand-built from native clay using the historic pre-Inca paleteado (paddle) technique, the piece is stone-burnished to a glassy, high-gloss sheen and subjected to traditional kiln-reduction smoking using mango leaves. This traditional liquid-clay resist process creates a striking contrast between the intense, pitch-black carbon field and the multi-toned sage green, rust terracotta, and warm ochre slip hues of the avian artwork. Because the marbling and resist process is done entirely by hand, no two pieces are ever completely identical.
A phenomenal designer statement object, this heavy, large-scale vessel injects a warm, organic global modern aesthetic when styled on open library shelving, a fireplace mantelpiece, or a grand office executive desk.
