The two-part form — consisting of a lower cabinet base and an upper section — was a common design for significant storage furniture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, allowing for ease of transport and installation in grand interiors.

The current black exterior finish is a later repainting over the original surface, a typical practice in case furniture across the centuries, and has developed a well-aged character of its own.
