A fine pair of small decorative tabletop or wall hanging picture frames in the Napoleon III or late Victorian Boulle revival taste, each with a rectangular outer form surrounding an oval interior aperture. The fronts are decorated with tortoiseshell-style mottled grounds, pale mother-of-pearl style inlay, scrolling arabesque ornament, gilt-metal borders, and beaded oval surrounds. The pink fabric or paper inserts currently occupying the apertures emphasize the warm red-brown and gilt palette of the frames, while the easel backs allow them to stand as intimate cabinet or dressing-table objects.
The design descends from the Boulle marquetry revival popularized in the 19th century, when Second Empire and late Victorian workshops revived the Louis XIV vocabulary of tortoiseshell, brass, mother-of-pearl, scrolling foliage, and richly contrasting surfaces for small luxury objects as well as furniture.
One frame is tortoiseshell, brass and mother of pearl. The other frame is tortoiseshell and brass.
