The Rouse Simmons "Christmas Tree Schooner" by Charles Vickery depicts the three-masted schooner under sail on open water, her canvas full against a moody sky. The Rouse Simmons was a famed Great Lakes schooner known as the "Christmas Tree Ship" for her annual run carrying freshly cut pines from the northern woods to Chicago. She was lost with all hands in a fierce Lake Michigan blizzard in November 1912, ending a beloved holiday tradition; her wreck was rediscovered in 1971 and remains a celebrated piece of Great Lakes maritime lore. Charles Vickery (American, 1913–1998), trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was widely regarded as one of the foremost marine painters of his era.
Pencil signed by the artist in the lower right margin and marked as an artist proof in the lower left. Titled in the lower center margin. Condition: a slight wrinkle in the right margin near the lower corner.
