"The Caught Lovers" is a limited edition lithograph, hand signed in pencil and numbered IX/XXX (9/30) by the artist. The print depicts a man and woman leaning against a railing, their faces obscured, rendered from an aerial perspective in Balet's signature muted blues and greens. The geometric patterns of the pier or boardwalk create a sense of isolation and quiet intimacy. Signed lower right, numbered lower left.
Jan Balet (German-American, 1913-2009) became renowned for his "contemporary primitive" style that explored human relationships and emotions with subtle psychological depth. This piece exemplifies his ability to convey complex feelings through simplified forms and carefully chosen compositions—the distant viewpoint and hidden faces suggest vulnerability, secrecy, or a private moment interrupted. The small edition size of 30 makes this a particularly scarce example of his lithographic work. Includes certificate of authenticity and in good overall condition with two small indentations in woman's dress area.
