A masterclass in European decorative arts, this rare mid-century Henredon Fine Furniture commode has been masterfully elevated from its original factory footprint into a singular work of functional art. This exclusive offering is brought to you by the Turtle and Crane Atelier, embodying our studio motto: “Taking the past and turning it into stunning decor for today.”Distinguished by its exceptionally rare Neoclassical tapered square legs and a fully finished back all around, this piece is structurally designed to seamlessly float anywhere in a room as a standalone focal point—a distinct scarcity among standard vintage case pieces.Henredon originally constructed this high-quality frame with a sophisticated blend of French Neoclassical architecture and clean geometric lines. By finishing this canvas in a bespoke Swedish Gustavian aesthetic, the atelier honors a deep historical lineage. In the late 18th century, King Gustav III of Sweden visited Versailles and adapted French court style for the Nordic lifestyle. Because Sweden lacked the gilded materials of France, craftsmen relied on painted finishes, pioneering the iconic palette seen here. The chalky gray-blues and pale, luminous alabaster creams were intentionally formulated to capture and maximize scarce daylight during long Scandinavian winters, reflecting ambient light beautifully throughout a space. The exterior showcases our signature, labor-intensive multi-layered glazing technique, built up with translucent hand-tinted glazes that create extraordinary optical depth. To anchor the finish with authentic historical gravity, a painstaking hand-applied fly-specking technique was executed. Micro-droplets of a specialized antiquing medium were organically flicked across the surface to mimic decades of natural soot settling into the grain recesses, resulting in a remarkably realistic 18th-century Scandinavian manor patina.Opening the upper drawer reveals an exquisite designer juxtaposition: the interior has been hand-fit and fully upholstered in a premium blush-pink and sage-green Chinoiserie botanical textile featuring delicate birds and peonies. The original cursive Henredon maker’s mark remains beautifully preserved inside as a guarantee of heritage and quality. The lower cabinet doors feature their original solid metal diamond fretwork grilles, providing sophisticated structural dimension and an airy feel.

All instances of paint breaking, edge distressing, and fly-specking are intentional, highly managed artistic choices implemented to create a convincing, time-worn Gustavian patina. The surface is smooth to the touch, free of modern synthetic sheen, paint drips, or tacky residue.Structural & Mechanical Function: Kiln-dried hardwood frame exhibits bench-made structural integrity with rock-solid joinery and zero wobble. The upper drawer glides smoothly on its original center wood track. Both doors hang completely plumb on original hinges and close flush against the frame.Hardware, Metalwork & Textiles: The upper drawer retains its original solid brass French pull-handle. The lower cabinet doors feature a harmoniously married vintage brass turn-key style pull, intentionally curated by the atelier to complement the original drawer hardware. Both pieces exhibit a soft, aged-bronze glow with natural historic oxidation left intact in the crevices. The integrated brass/metal diamond fretwork grilles on the door panels are structurally pristine, completely rigid, and securely seated flush within their frames. The interior Chinoiserie lining is immaculately applied. less
