ABOUT THE WORKS
F. Edward Hulme was a trained artist and drawing professor, but botany was a serious amateur pursuit. He both wrote Familiar Wild Flowers and supplied the original drawings for its color plates, combining his professional skill as an artist with years spent studying plants firsthand. His botanical interests were substantial enough that he had been elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1869. Familiar Wild Flowers ultimately became Hulme’s best-known work, and its long-running popularity established these pieces as some of the most well-known and widely loved botanical illustrations of the Victorian era.
