A large 19th-century French mezzotint engraving titled Le Lac, engraved by Pierre Cottin (1823–1886) after a painting by Constant Joseph … Read more A large 19th-century French mezzotint engraving titled Le Lac, engraved by Pierre Cottin (1823–1886) after a painting by Constant Joseph Brochart (1816–1899), and printed and published by Goupil & Cie on April 1, 1869.
The atmospheric composition depicts two elegantly dressed women aboard a sailboat on a mountain lake, rendered in the rich tonal gradations characteristic of mezzotint engraving. Original inscriptions beneath the image identify Brochart as the painter and Cottin as the engraver, with the title Le Lac prominently engraved at center. The Goupil publication line reads “Imprimé & Publié par Goupil & Cie, Éditeurs, le 1er Avril 1869,” followed by Paris, London and The Hague.
Goupil's historical catalogue records Le Lac with three closely related Brochart compositions engraved by Cottin: La Montagne, Le Glacier and La Grotte. Related examples are represented in major institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and British Museum. The Musée d'Orsay Salon records identify Cottin's related 1869 Brochart engravings as works executed in the manière noire, or mezzotint technique.
The reverse retains an old label from Rudolf Lesch Fine Arts, Inc., 225 Fifth Avenue, New York, identifying the work as Le Lac by Brochart, providing additional history of the print's passage through the American art trade.
