Navigation lanterns of this distinct three-lens configuration were crafted during the height of the age of sail and early steam navigation to meet strict maritime safety requirements. These combination lamps allowed officers on deck to signal direction and right-of-way using red for port, blue or green for alternative designations depending on service, and clear forward lenses for illumination. Fabricated from heavy-gauge brass to withstand harsh marine environments and salt spray, they were mounted on brackets along the wheelhouse or bulkheads of vessels.

Craftsmen hand-soldered and riveted the brass bodies, incorporating specialized ventilation crowns above to allow oil-burning wicks to stay lit in strong winds while exhausting smoke safely. The distinctive bullseye lenses concentrated the flame's light into directional beams visible across open water. As electric lighting replaced oil lamps aboard commercial and private vessels by the mid-twentieth century, these solid brass artifacts transitioned from working maritime tools to sought-after pieces of nautical decor.
