Dating to circa the 1970s–1980s, the complete stacking form comprises three fitted porcelain tiers with matching lid and is accompanied by a carved dark wood presentation stand.

The porcelain is richly decorated in an intricate polychrome palette of iron red, orange, blue, green, grey and gold. Repeating folding-fan reserves are filled with minute floral and geometric ornament, complemented by bird details and extensive gilt outlining. The density and precision of the surface decoration give the piece a highly ornamental presence characteristic of Kozan-gama decorative porcelain.

The underside bears the distinctive Kozan-gama 庫山窯 factory mark within a multicolour cartouche, together with a MADE IN JAPAN label. Maehata Pottery developed Kozan-gama as one of its proprietary brands during the later twentieth century, making this a particularly appealing example of Japanese Showa-period Mino ware with both decorative and functional tableware interest.
