Renowned for making high quality fine English furniture, James Shoolbred of Tottenham Court Road, London, manufactured high quality furniture from the 1870s until the early 20th century.
from the mid 1880s they held a Royal Warrant.

A beautifully proportioned antique English library or reading chair, featuring an imposing tall caned back, richly figured timber frame and elegant turned front legs terminating in original brass-mounted wooden casters.

The chair has a wonderfully distinctive silhouette, with a generously sized rectangular cane back framed by gently curved uprights and shaped, scrolling arms. The canework extends continuously through the back and beneath the seat rails, adding a light and decorative counterpoint to the substantial wooden construction.

The front rail is particularly characterful, with its broad, gently shaped profile and handsome aged patina. Beneath it are a pair of finely turned front legs with multiple decorative rings and tapering forms, each retaining its brass ferrules and small wooden caster. The rear legs sweep elegantly backwards, giving the chair a graceful sense of movement and excellent visual balance.

The warm medium-brown timber has developed a beautiful depth of colour over time, with natural variation, surface marks and patina consistent with age. The woven cane has an attractive honey tone which complements the darker wood beautifully.
