This is a beautiful antique Tibetan gyaling (rgya-gling), a traditional double-reed wind instrument used in Tibetan Buddhist ceremonial music. The piece is particularly striking for its extensive engraved and applied metal decoration, with gold-tone brass, silver-colored fittings, floral and geometric patterns, and a large flared bell.
The gyaling has a long history in Tibetan Buddhist monastic tradition and has traditionally been used for monastery calls as well as religious ceremonies. Its loud, penetrating tone is intended to carry across the monastery grounds.
