An exceptional Antique English Victorian George Jones & Sons majolica jardinière, made in Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1873–1885. This monumental cachepot is richly modeled in high relief with vivid blue-and-yellow birds among flowering branches, pink blossoms, buds, and green foliage, all set against a deep, glossy cobalt-blue ground.
The form is framed by handsome ochre basketweave bands at the rim and foot, creating a wonderful contrast in color and texture. Its exuberant palette, naturalistic bird-and-bloom decoration, and sculptural glazing exemplify the sophisticated Victorian majolica for which George Jones & Sons is admired. Substantial in both scale and visual impact, it makes a beautiful standalone decorative object as well as a functional planter or cachepot.
The underside is impressed with the intertwined GJ monogram and crescent marked “& SONS,” identifying the maker as George Jones & Sons. A hand-painted black factory pattern/form number, appearing to read 5262, remains within the unglazed base reserve. The GJ-and-“& Sons” crescent mark dates the jardinière to the period after the firm became George Jones & Sons in 1873.
At 13 inches high and 13.75 inches in diameter, this is an impressive large-scale antique jardinière—ideal for a palm, fern, orchid, flowering plant, or cascading ivy. It would make a remarkable centerpiece, mantel accent, entry-table statement, conservatory planter, or addition to a traditional, English, chinoiserie, maximalist, grandmillennial, or collected garden-inspired interior.

The deep cobalt-blue ground, warm ochre basketweave borders, and raised bird-and-blossom decoration remain bright, saturated, and exceptionally decorative. The pale turquoise interior shows expected evidence of historic use as a planter, including light surface wear, minor scattered spotting, and some discoloration/residue around the lower interior. A very small, tight hairline is present near the upper basketweave band, as photographed. Stable and is subtle within the overall decoration. less
