Exceptional vintage lc4 chaise longue by cassina, one of the most renowned and influential designs in modern furniture design. The lc4, based on a 1928 design by le corbusier, pierre jeanneret, and charlotte perriand, is considered an icon of classic modernism. This particular example is distinguished by its low production number of 1123.
its radically functional design is directly oriented towards the human body and various reclining positions. A particularly characteristic feature is the separation between the supporting base and the curved reclining surface. The black lacquered, architecturally designed base forms the foundation upon which the chrome-plated tubular steel frame rests. The chaise can be adjusted to different reclining positions within the structurally defined range.
the curved reclining surface consists of a chrome-plated tubular steel frame with numerous black elastic straps. These provide a flexible base for the cushion and underscore the technically sophisticated nature of the design.
the most striking feature of this example is the dark pony hide cushion. The natural fur creates a captivating contrast to the gleaming chrome and the black lacquered base. Decades of use have given the cushion a pronounced patina: while the pony hide is still clearly visible in various areas, it shows more significant hair loss and abrasion, particularly in the seat and leg areas, revealing the underlying leather in places.
at the head end is the characteristic cylindrical headrest, attached to the frame by leather loops. Together with the ergonomically curved reclining surface, this creates the unmistakable, almost weightless silhouette of the lc4.
the combination of chrome-plated steel tubing, a black base, and pony hide makes this version a particularly distinctive example of the design. Despite its generous dimensions, the construction appears light and airy and retains a remarkably modern presence almost a century after its original creation.
condition: authentic vintage condition with significant signs of age and use. The pony hide cushion shows extensive hair loss, abrasion, and a pronounced patina, particularly in the seat and leg areas. In some places, the hide is completely worn away, revealing the leather underneath. There is also age-related wear along the edges and binding.
the black elastic carrying straps are largely intact. The chrome-plated tubular steel frame shows scratches, abrasion, and surface marks typical of its age. The black-painted base also exhibits signs of use, minor paint loss, and patina. The distinctly aged condition of the pony hide cushion gives this piece an authentic vintage character; alternatively, the cushion could be professionally restored or replaced if desired.
