An Extremely Good Quality Pair Of Early 18th Century Queen Anne Period Walnut Single Side Chairs, Having Tall Swept Backs with Attractive Vase Shaped Central Splats, Over Upholstered Shaped Drop In Seats, Raised On Very Elegant Cabriole Legs To Front Terminating On Pointed Pad Feet.
Dating from the early part of the 18th century, this attractive pair of chairs are typical of the elegant and restrained furniture produced during the Queen Anne period. The tall, gently swept backs give the chairs importance in the way that they stand and the shaped central vase splats with scrolling detail create a simple, but restrained, sense of movement.
Constructed from good quality walnut throughout, they retain a pleasing warm colour and surface, with the inevitable old marks, minor imperfections and evidence of use which one would expect from chairs which have survived for around 300 years. The shaped drop-in seats have been relatively recently upholstered in a neutral patterned fabric and could of course be very easily and inexpensively recovered to suit any particular interior.
The elegant cabriole front legs, terminating in pointed pad feet, are very well proportioned and complement the sweeping lines of the backs extremely well. Although originally these would have been made as simple side chairs, their relatively compact proportions make them extremely versatile today, working equally well as occasional bedroom chairs, either side of a console table, in a hallway or as additional seating within a drawing room.
As with all our items, these chairs have been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish, before being offered for sale, ensuring that they are ready to place straight into the home.
