An exceptional pair of french hard-paste porcelain rococo revival vases, produced at the jacob petit manufactory in fontainebleau circa 1840. The dramatic profile combines deeply flared, undulating rims with pierced side handles, an elegantly waisted body and broad sculptural bases.
the white porcelain is extensively modelled with shells, acanthus leaves, c-scrolls and flowing volutes. Each detail is selectively enhanced with hand-applied gilding, creating a rich contrast against the glossy white ground. The deeply flared openings could be used for small flower arrangements or for spills—rolled paper tapers formerly used to carry a flame from a candle or fireplace.
the bodies are hand-painted with roses and other garden flowers. A principal bouquet appears among smaller scattered floral sprays, with subtle variations between the two hand-painted compositions. Small gilt foliate motifs continue across the bodies and the bases, which are further ornamented with moulded scrollwork, shells and arabesques.
both undersides bear the underglaze cobalt-blue hand-painted j.p. Monogram, the factory mark of jacob petit. Born jacob mardochée (1796–1868), petit moved his porcelain production from belleville, paris, to fontainebleau in 1834. His work became closely associated with the rococo revival through inventive asymmetrical forms, pierced ornament, vivid enamel colours and lavish gilding. This pair is a particularly complete expression of that decorative language.
