A highly decorative late-19th- to early-20th-century Continental porcelain potpourri urn and cover, executed in the exuberant Vienna and Dresden Rococo Revival taste.
The baluster-form vessel is raised on a molded pedestal base and flanked by elaborate scrolling handles enriched with polychrome decoration and gilding. Around the body is a charming continuous procession of modeled putti, complemented by a sculptural female mask and scrolling architectural ornament.
The shoulder and lid are lavishly embellished with hand-applied porcelain flowers, blossoms, leaves and buds, creating a richly three-dimensional surface. The removable domed cover incorporates elongated openwork apertures designed to release the fragrance of potpourri and terminates in a dramatic floral bouquet finial.
The palette combines ivory, blush pink, lavender, yellow, green and blue with gilt highlights, creating the light, romantic coloration associated with European Rococo Revival porcelain.
The underside bears an underglaze-blue Bindenschild or “beehive”-style shield mark. This historic symbol originated with the Imperial Vienna Porcelain Manufactory but was subsequently imitated by numerous late-19th-century Austrian, Bohemian and German porcelain manufacturers. Accordingly, this example is conservatively catalogued as Vienna-style Continental porcelain rather than definitively attributed to the Imperial Vienna factory.
