Dating from 1985 and numbered 95/100, the work uniquely contextualizes the biblical New Testament narrative through traditional Japanese folk aesthetic.

STYLE: Watanabe was a leading figure in the mid-century Japanese Mingei (Folk Art) movement. He utilized Kappazuri (stencil printing), a traditional textile-dyeing method he adapted into fine printmaking.

TECHNIQUE: The process involves cutting heavy paper stencils, coating them with a protective paste, brushing on vibrant natural mineral and organic pigments suspended in a soybean milk medium, and then washing away the resist paste. The artist typically printed on Momigami, a thick mulberry (kozo) paper that was hand-crumpled to create a heavily textured, rustic, and tactile surface quality.

CULTURAL BLEND: The print masterfully translates Western Christian theology into familiar Japanese domestic imagery, a concept known as inculturation. For example, the main course presented on the massive dish in the center of the table features a Japanese Sea Bream (tai) instead of bread and lamb. In Japanese culture, tai is an auspicious food served on highly celebratory occasions to symbolize joy, blessing, and good fortune.
Further, the surrounding small plates contain items resembling traditional Japanese sushi rolls and local side dishes instead of Mediterranean unleavened bread. The bottles resting on the table are shaped like traditional sake carafes.

FIGURES: Christ is designated at the absolute center, enclosed by a prominent golden halo. He and his disciples are dressed in graphic, boldly lined garments reminiscent of traditional kimonos. Their stylized faces borrow heavily from early Japanese Buddhist block prints rather than European Renaissance conventions. The stark, deeply saturated red ground serves a dual symbolic purpose—providing structural contrast to the figures while visually prefiguring the sacrificial blood of Christ's imminent crucifixion.

PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS: Watanabe famously stated that he preferred his art to hang in ordinary places where everyday people gather. Today, variations of his Last Supper series reside in world-class institutions, including the Vatican Museum of Modern Religious Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and the British Museum in London.
