A striking sculptural studio pottery earthenware vessel featuring a richly textured, architectural form and an exceptionally unusual organic finial. The substantial square-form body is finished in earthy tones of ochre, olive green, brown and golden amber, with a beautifully mottled surface characteristic of handcrafted earthenware.
The front of the vessel is embellished with an elaborate hand-incised and dimensional relief decoration, centered by a raised oval medallion and surrounded by concentric bands of abstract, geometric and organic motifs. The decoration extends around the body, giving the piece visual interest from every angle.
The vessel is topped by a broad, raised neck and removable sculptural stopper. The stopper is particularly distinctive, with an organic, bulbous form surrounded by a ring of rounded clay elements resembling berries, petals or seed pods. Together, the body and stopper create an unusually expressive work of decorative studio ceramics.
The combination of primitive-inspired surface decoration, earthy glazing, dimensional relief and sculptural form makes this an especially appealing piece for collectors of mid-century and modern studio pottery, art ceramics and one-of-a-kind decorative objects.
Condition: Good vintage condition, consistent with age and use. The piece displays the expected surface variations, patination and minor imperfections inherent to handcrafted earthenware.
