Of small rectangular form with softly shaped sides, the box is mounted with a dark patinated metal hinge and frame. The domed porcelain lid centres on a finely painted courting scene depicting an elegantly dressed couple seated within a pastoral landscape, executed in the Rococo Revival taste associated with the enduring influence of 18th-century French painters such as François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonard.

The central scene is surrounded by elaborate raised gilt ornament, including beaded and scrolling borders, while scattered polychrome flowers decorate the white porcelain ground. The shaped sides are similarly embellished with floral sprays and generous gilding, giving this diminutive box an exceptionally rich decorative appearance.

The underside bears a blue painted mark in the manner of the interlaced-L marks historically associated with the Sèvres manufactory. This should be regarded as a Sèvres-style or pseudo-Sèvres mark rather than confirmation of manufacture by the Royal/Imperial Sèvres factory.

A particularly decorative example of the 19th-century French Rococo Revival taste for luxurious objects inspired by 18th-century courtly porcelain.

Condition:
Very good antique condition. No notable chips, cracks or restoration to the porcelain. Some age-related wear to the gilding and metal mounts is present.
