An exceptionally delicate and decorative pair of italian two-light wall sconces, dating approximately from the 1930s to 1940s. The sconces were conceived as a true opposing pair, with their branches, leaves, candle cups and flowers arranged in reverse-facing compositions. This intentional left-and-right design makes them particularly suitable for installation on either side of a mirror, painting, doorway or architectural feature. Despite their relatively compact dimensions, the sconces display remarkable craftsmanship and an unusually rich three-dimensional composition. Their frames are assembled from individually shaped and joined gilt metal branches, finely modeled leaves and sculptural tulip-form candle cups. Numerous hand-formed porcelain roses in softly aged shades of ivory, cream, pale yellow and blush pink are individually attached throughout the winding foliage. The naturally aged gilding reveals warm reddish-brown undertones and darker areas of oxidation, giving the metalwork an exceptionally attractive and authentic patina. The irregularities found throughout the construction emphasize the handmade character of the pair and distinguish these sconces from later mass-produced decorative lighting. Each sconce is fitted with two e14 sockets. The electrical wiring was renewed by the previous owner circa the 2010s. For use with standard american e12 bulbs, four threaded e14-to-e12 socket adapters are included. These adapters simply screw into the existing e14 sockets. The sconces are suspended from their integrated hanging loops. For the cleanest installation, we recommend placing a recessed electrical connection point behind each fixture, allowing the wiring to remain concealed. Professional installation by a qualified electrician is recommended. The porcelain flowers display age-related wear, including small chips, losses and irregularities to some petals. The gilded metal shows expected patination, oxidation, discoloration and areas of wear consistent with age. These traces have deliberately been preserved and contribute greatly to the historic appearance and individual beauty of the pair. A rare and wonderfully romantic pair of italian wall lights, combining fine metalwork, hand-formed porcelain flowers and the particularly desirable symmetry of a genuine reverse-matched pair. Dimensions per sconce: height: 27 cm / 10.63 in. Width: 14 cm / 5.51 in. Depth: 13.5 cm / 5.31 in.
