Here is a vintage Japanese tansu-style jewelry chest dating to the 1960s–1970s. Crafted in warm-toned wood, the petite chest is beautifully detailed with ornate brass corner mounts, decorative brass medallions, traditional bail pulls, and a substantial carrying handle across the top.
The chest features six drawers in graduated sizes, including four smaller upper drawers and two full-width drawers below. Open them to reveal a wonderful surprise: all the drawers are lined in rich cobalt blue velvet, creating a beautiful contrast against the warm wood and aged brass.
Modeled after traditional Japanese tansu cabinetry, the miniature scale and abundance of decorative hardware give this piece so much character. The bottom drawer also retains its decorative keyhole escutcheon, while the elaborate pierced corner mounts extend the ornamentation across the top.
At just under 12 inches wide, it is a wonderful little decorative chest without taking up much space. Perfect atop a dresser or vanity for jewelry and small keepsakes, or simply displayed as a decorative object. The combination of warm wood, aged brass and vivid blue interiors makes this one especially charming.
