A spectacular signed Kyle Kreigh studio pottery bowl, distinguished by an extraordinary crystalline glaze in layered shades of emerald, jade, celadon, turquoise and seafoam green. Kreigh is an American ceramic artist known for his technically demanding crystalline glazes and porcelain vessels and for his association with Door Pottery.
The bowl's surface is the star. Large radiating crystals bloom across the center like water lilies, flowers or underwater forms, surrounded by hundreds of smaller circular crystals and rich brown spotting. The effect is wonderfully organic and almost otherworldly—part botanical, part marine and part mineral specimen. Because these crystalline formations develop during firing rather than being conventionally painted onto the surface, every piece is inherently unique.
An undulating edge with hand-applied bead and pebble-like ceramic elements gives the shallow bowl an additional sculptural dimension. The yellow-green rim provides a vivid contrast to the aquatic turquoise and emerald interior, while a raised foot gives the piece the presence of a low pedestal bowl.
Signed “Kreigh” on the underside.
Kreigh's experimental approach to glaze places his work within the tradition of important American art and studio pottery. His work has direct connections to Door Pottery and the crystalline-glaze tradition associated with makers such as Adelaide Alsop Robineau and Campbell Pottery, while the organic form and manipulated edge have the expressive quality collectors associate with George Ohr and the American studio pottery movement.
At approximately 10.5" diameter × 2.5" H, this is an especially versatile scale for decorating. Use it as a coffee-table centerpiece, console bowl, dining-table accent, bookshelf object or cabinet display piece. Its watery palette works beautifully in Organic Modern, Coastal Modern, Contemporary, Mid-Century Modern, Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and collected eclectic interiors—particularly alongside natural materials, contemporary art, Murano glass and other studio ceramics.
A highly decorative example of contemporary American art pottery that reads equally well as a functional vessel or a small piece of ceramic sculpture.
