The … Read more Striking vintage American flexible room divider, circa 1940s, constructed from numerous narrow hardwood slats secured to substantial leather bands. The wood retains a beautifully aged red lacquer finish with extensive natural wear and patina developed over decades.

The flexible construction allows the screen to be arranged in a gentle curve, serpentine form, or tighter enclosure as needed. Its rhythmic vertical slats and sculptural flexibility recall the pioneering modernist screens of Alvar Aalto, while the heavy leather-backed construction gives this example a distinctly American industrial character.

An unusually architectural piece with a wonderful combination of utilitarian construction, early modernist design, and richly weathered surface.
