The overall appearance is light … Read more 19th century Swedish Gustavian bench, crafted in pine with a heavily distressed original painted finish. The overall appearance is light gray with antique white undertones, along with subtle traces of green and ocher visible within the aged surface. Extensive scraping and wear are present across the upper backrest and lower front skirt, contributing to the authentic timeworn character of the bench.
Two carved griffins face one another along the upper back, while egg and dart carving accents the sides, skirt, and back. Four turned front feet support the substantial form. Some of the decorative carved floral medallions, originally crafted in wood, have been replaced at some point with newer white reproductions that may be plaster.
The bench was originally designed to open for use as a spare bed. The seat is not hinged but lifts completely away to reveal storage below. Two metal rings remain at the narrow ends which secure the back and base in place.
Seat depth measures approximately 24 inches, with a current seat height of approximately 22 inches. A thick foam cushion simply covered in muslin has been added to demonstrate how the bench could appear upholstered. The buyer may choose to upholster the cushion at their discretion.
Typical age related cracks, nicks, scratches, ag-related separation (see sides/back) and other signs of wear are visible throughout and reflect generations of use. Restored, stable, and ready to use.
