The scene depicts Mary wearing a brown habit and a flowery mantle, crowned with twelve stars above, symbolizing her role as Queen of Heaven, as she holds the Christ Child in her left arm. He wears a brown tunic. The Virgin and Christ each hold a scapular, a garment worn by the Carmelite order. Below two figures plead for mercy. Baroque culture is gestural. The gestures in the painting were included so that paintings "spoke". The gestures seen in this piece include Christ's hand showing the speaker - this hand shape is most often associated with Christ the Pantochraotor illustrating His desire to teach us through the icon and His presence. Mary's left hand shows Benedico - the symbol to bless, absolve, forgive, consecrate, and heal. Set in a richly carved 19th century gilt wood frame. See less
