Striking vintage handcrafted seashell table lamp in the manner of Richard Hoosin, featuring a dramatic domed shade constructed from dozens of natural ribbed clam/cockle shells individually incorporated into a dark leaded or soldered framework.
When illuminated, the natural shells become beautifully translucent, producing shades of warm ivory, cream, peach and soft coral. The effect is especially dramatic at night and gives the lamp a wonderful coastal glow.
The shade rests on an elegant dark bronze-finish cast-metal base with a slender fluted stem and sculptural spreading leaf-form foot, giving the piece a strong Art Nouveau influence. A decorative pierced heat cap and finial complete the design.
An inscription scratched into the upper portion of the shade appears to read “HOOSIN”, an important detail that warrants further research. A remarkably close example with the same 18” × 12 1/4” dimensions has been cataloged at auction as being in the manner of Richard Hoosin.
A wonderful statement lamp for a Palm Beach, coastal, tropical, eclectic or Art Nouveau-inspired interior. Equally attractive illuminated or unlit.
