The chair was recently examined in person by a professional upholstery shop experienced with antique furniture. They carefully removed and inspected the entire underside while searching for a maker’s label or mark, then properly reassembled it. No identifying mark was found. Based on the chair’s construction, carving, upholstery details and overall form, they felt it showed a strong affiliation with John Henry Belter and the Belter school of American Rococo Revival furniture.

The shop also noted the traditional gimp-trimmed upholstery and advised that any remaining maker’s identification could potentially be concealed within the upholstered backrest. We elected not to disturb the intact back upholstery simply to search for a mark.

The original carved floral crest has broken cleanly from its attachment points but remains intact and is included with the chair. It has intentionally been left unrepaired so the buyer may have it professionally reattached. The asking price reflects this condition.

Otherwise, the chair presents remarkably well for its age. The ornate floral upholstery remains attractive and complements the beautifully shaped and carved frame.

Attribution: Offered as attributed to the Belter school / in the manner of John Henry Belter based on professional examination and stylistic characteristics. It is not represented as a documented or signed John Henry Belter piece.
