An elegant example of early 20th-century American silver craftsmanship, this antique sterling silver picture frame by Black, Starr & Frost dates to approximately 1915. With its handsome oval form, substantial proportions, and beautifully executed detailing, the frame has the refined presence associated with one of America's most prestigious historic jewelers and silversmiths.
The wide sterling silver border features a striking engine-turned striped pattern, creating alternating bands that catch and reflect the light beautifully. At the top is a distinctive triangular cartouche engraved “Sonny,” lending the piece a wonderfully personal character and hinting at its original history as a treasured family possession. Particularly attractive are the frame's large polished ball feet, which elevate the oval body and give it an unusually architectural and substantial appearance. The combination of bold feet, geometric engine turning, and restrained ornamentation gives the frame a sophisticated early 20th-century character. The silver is appropriately marked “Sterling.”
The frame measures approximately 9.5 inches high, 7.5 inches wide, and 3.5 inches deep when displayed. The generously sized photo opening measures approximately 7.75 inches high by 7 inches wide, making this a substantial and impressive tabletop frame for a desk, library, mantel, or dressing table. Good antique condition with light signs of wear and handling. The backing is original and has some staining, it is held in place by small nails that need to be removed to access the back to insert a photo. The weight of the silver is approximately 60 grams. The frame is empty, no photo is included. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Black, Starr & Frost traces its history to New York City in 1810, making it one of America's oldest and most distinguished luxury jewelry and silver firms. Through a succession of prominent partnerships during the 19th century, the business ultimately became known as Black, Starr & Frost and developed a reputation for exceptional jewelry, sterling silver, presentation pieces, and luxury objects. The firm catered to some of America's most affluent families and became closely associated with the elegance of Gilded Age and early 20th-century New York.
Dating from this prestigious period in the firm's history, the frame is a wonderful combination of American sterling silver craftsmanship, understated elegance, and personal history. It would be equally at home displaying a treasured family photograph or period portrait, or simply presented as part of a collection of fine American silver.
